How to Clean a Horse Bit: Sprenger Care and Inspection
After riding, rinse a metal horse bit thoroughly with water, dry it and inspect it before storage. This removes saliva or feed residue and makes it easier to spot wear. Always follow the care instructions on the exact product because materials and coatings can need different treatment.
How to clean a horse bit after riding
- Rinse the bit with clean water after every use.
- Use a soft cloth to dry it and remove remaining residue.
- If residue persists, use a small soft brush without scraping or using sharp tools.
- Check the product’s care information before applying polish or another cleaner.
- Store the bit clean and dry.
Sprenger bit care by material
Sprenger notes that copper-containing alloys, including Aurigan and Sensogan, may darken naturally through oxidation. A colour change alone is not the same as wear or damage. Follow the product-specific advice for the material; avoid aggressive cleaners or sharp objects, particularly on coated products.
For Sprenger Diamond Paste, follow the manufacturer’s directions for compatible materials, apply only a small amount with a soft cloth, and rinse afterwards. Do not assume a polish is suitable for every metal, coating or synthetic mouthpiece.
